WHAT DID COUNCIL TELL THE CANDIDATES?

Five candidates met with John Tait at Tiffany Restaurant in Coldwater on Sunday, October 18, 2026. John reports that the discussion revealed that none of these five had been notified by Severn council about the Watershed Debacle inquiry and its concerns before the meeting. This is John’s account; individual written confirmations of what each candidate knew and received remain to be obtained.

THE FIVE ATTENDEES IDENTIFIED IN JOHN’S MEETING RECORD

Jane Dunlop — candidate for Mayor.

Suzanne Burtenshaw — candidate for Deputy Mayor.

Jim Gleadall — candidate for Councillor, Ward 1.

Colin Bidmead — candidate for Councillor, Ward 2.

Brandi Savoy — candidate for Councillor, Ward 3.

John’s October 18 follow-up correspondence thanked these five for joining him that morning. Jim Gleadall was thanked for helping bring the group together. This contemporaneous correspondence supports the meeting and follow-up history; it does not itself establish five independently confirmed statements about non-notification. Private strategy correspondence and personal contact details are not reproduced here.

WHY THEIR ACCOUNTS MATTER

These attendees are potential witnesses to their own knowledge, the information they received, and the discussion they heard. Each may help establish when the inquiry first came to their attention, whether council or Township staff provided a briefing, and whether they learned about it through John, the blog or another source.

If each independently confirms receiving no council notification, that would support an account of non-notification to these five candidates. It would not, by itself, establish that no candidate or landowner was notified through any channel.

ELECTION OUTCOME

Severn’s official certified 2026 election results record that none of these five candidates was elected. That is confirmed election context. It does not establish the reason for their defeat or prove coordinated exclusion.

JOHN TAIT’S ASSESSMENT — DISRESPECT, UNFAIRNESS AND WASTED EFFORT

In my view, the reported failure to give these candidates a clear council briefing was disrespectful and deeply unfair. People who put their names forward to serve their community deserve a fair opportunity to understand unresolved concerns affecting the residents they hope to represent. Their willingness to stand for office should be met with information and a direct explanation.

Candidates invest time, energy and their own resources in meeting residents, preparing campaign material and trying to understand local problems. When relevant knowledge is not conveyed, they may spend that effort with an incomplete picture, repeat inquiries that could have been answered by one common briefing, and lose valuable time in which to ask informed questions or seek a response. Landowners face a similar burden when they must organize meetings and pursue records to obtain an explanation.

I regard avoidable duplication, delay and expense caused by withholding relevant information as wasted effort that should have been prevented. We have not yet quantified any candidate’s resulting loss of time or money. Each candidate should be invited to describe their own experience, identify any additional work or expense, and explain what an earlier briefing would have allowed them to do.

If council knew of these concerns and deliberately chose to keep candidates uninformed, I would regard that conduct as deceitful. That is my assessment of deliberate withholding; whether such a decision was made, who made it, what was known and why must be established through the notification records and individual accounts. The election results alone do not answer those questions.

The accountability question is direct: why were candidates and affected landowners left to spend their own time and resources seeking knowledge that a clear, neutral explanation could have conveyed? Council should identify what it communicated, when, to whom and under whose authority.

THE QUESTIONS FOR COUNCIL

What information about the Watershed Debacle inquiry and possible litigation was provided to candidates? By whom, on what date and through what method? Please identify the briefing, notice, distribution list or other supporting record. If no common briefing was provided, what decision or policy explains that?

This is a request for an account of what happened. This issue does not make a finding that a legal notice duty was breached.

QUESTIONS FOR EACH POTENTIAL WITNESS

1. Did you attend the October 18 Tiffany Restaurant meeting? What do you personally recall about the notification discussion?

2. Before that meeting, what did you know about the Watershed Debacle inquiry, and when and from whom did you learn it?

3. Did council, the Mayor, the Clerk or another Township official send or give you information about the inquiry? Please identify the date, person, method and any retained record.

4. If you recall saying that you had received no council notification, what exactly did you mean? Please distinguish no official briefing from having no knowledge through any source.

5. Would you provide a dated account in your own words and identify any correction needed to this issue?

Each person is invited to confirm or correct their own account. Naming them as potential witnesses does not imply that they endorse the inquiry, agree with John’s conclusions, or have already supplied a witness statement.
